  • Description

Student protests were renewed in Bangkok yesterday (Tuesday) when the Rector of Ramkanhaeng University refused to re-instate nine students expelled last week after publication of an article critical of the Thai military government. The Thai leaders agreed to re-instate the students at the end of last week when demonstrating students staged a protest sit-in around the constitutional monument in central Bangkok. During the weekend it was announced that before the nine students could be re-admitted to the university, they would first need to come before an examining committee. Classes were immediately suspended in Ramkanhaeng University while angry students spoke out against the Rector and, more indirectly, against the government. Other groups, also with loudspeakers, urged against further action. A ballot was organised by the students union to vote on the future of the Rector. Police officers watched as students received ballot slips and voted on whether the Rector should remain or resign his post. Voting was suspended when groups supporting the Rector moved loudspeakers outside the hall and urged against drastic action.
