  • Description

Shops, factories and amusement places were all closed down in Caracas, Venezuela, Apr 22, as a gesture of support by the populace for President Romula Betancourt's speedy suppression of the revolt at San Cristobal, Apr 20.

The rebellion started when insurgents - led by Jesus Maria Castro Leon, a former Air Force general - crossed into Venezuela from Colombia, seized the military barracks at San Cristobal and called for the overthrow of the Government.

President Betancourt declared a state of emergency and broadcast an ultimatum, telling the rebels to surrender or be bombed. Planes and troops were rushed to the area and by the afternoon the Army claimed that it had localized the uprising.

Castro Leon was reported as being sought by the Venezuelan National Guard, and the border with Colombia was sealed.
