  • Description

In Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian Emperor, Haile Selassie, has welcomed delegates from 41 African nations to the tenth summit and anniversary celebrations of the Organisation of African Unity.

The delegates were also welcomed by the Organisation's Administrative Secretary-General, Mr. Nzo Ekangaki. Later in his speech, he called on the United Nations to go to war if South Africa continued to defy its resolution on Namibia (Southwest Africa). It had done so in Korea and the Congo, he said, and the Namibia issue was the one challenge that ought to push the U.N. to the most extreme act in the defence of justice.

In his speech, Major General Yakubu Gowon, president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, called for the exercises of "highest reason and restraint" in the solution of inter-African political problems.

He referred to the mural on the wall of Africa Hall -- where the DAU was set up ten years ago -- and noted that it showed the many changes during the decade.

He said it was only by adhering strictly to the OAU's fundamental precepts and by co-operating on a basis of sovereign equality that they could hope for peace in Africa.
