Background: Spain's General Franco and Dr. Salazar, the Portuguese Premier, met for talks at the Spanish frontier town of Merida, June 20. Accompanied by their Foreign Ministers the two leaders had talks on "close relations between the two countries". They last met in July 1957.
The next day the two statesmen toured the Roman Threatre, of Merida, which has recently been restored. In the afternoon they visited the Montijo Dam which provides irrigation for the farms of the lowlands through the Lobaton Channel.
in a statement issued by General Franco and Dr. Salazar after the talks it was stated that their meeting revealed "perfect understanding and cordiality" continuing the personal contracts that have existed between the two nations for the past 20 years.
