• Short Summary

WASHINGTON - AND THE SIEGE OF THE UNITED STATES TREASURY IS OVER. FIRST, THERE WAS?

  • Description

WASHINGTON - AND THE SIEGE OF THE UNITED STATES TREASURY IS OVER. FIRST, THERE WAS THE RUSH BY COIN COLLECTORS TO SNAP UP THE SWINDLING SUPPLY OF SILVER DOLLARS. SO GREAT WAS THE DEMAND THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAVE NOW PUT A HALT TO THE SALE.

THEN CAME ANOTHER RUSH, THIS TIME TO BUY THE FIRST MINTING OF THE NEW JOHN F. KENNEDY HALF-DOLLARS. SEVENTY-THOUSAND OF THEM WENT ON SALE ON TUESDAY MORNING. BY NOON (3 1/2 HOURS LATER), THE ENTIRE SUPPLY HAD GONE - EVEN THOUGH EACH PURCHASER WAS LIMITED TO A MAXIMUM OF 40 COINS.

DESPITE THE LIMIT AND THE FACT THAT THE COINS WILL SOON BE ON SALE AT BANKS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, THE LINE OF CUSTOMERS STRETCHED FOR NEARLY TWO BLOCKS WHEN THE TREASURY OPENED FOR BUSINESS AT 8.30 A.M.

THE RUSH WAS SO GREAT THAT TRAFFIC JAMS BUILT UP. THE NEW COIN CARRIES A PICTURE OF THE LATE PRESIDENT.
