  • Description

A large delegation from Bhutan - the medieval-like State sandwiched between India's North East Frontier and China - visited Delhi, India, Nov. 22, where they laid flowers on Gandhi's tomb, visited other places of interest, and were received in audience by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the Indian President.

The youthful Bhutanese delegation is ostensibly on a tour of India to acquaint themselves with the administration and mechanics of modern civilisation, in preparation for the drastic change in their way of life as the '20th century' invades '18th Century' Bhutan in the wake of new roads scheduled in a modernisation programme agreed upon by both India and Bhutan.

Recent reports that Chinese troops had crossed into Bhutan, and hurried denials of same by India's Foreign Minister, have once again focused world interest on this tiny 'Shangri-La' Himalayan State. By special treaty India is responsible for its external affairs.... and defence.

Bhutan's Premier, Jigme Dorji, visited Delhi last September. During his 10-day stay he sought confirmation of Indian Premier Nehru's statement that any act of aggression against Bhutan would be regarded as an attack against India herself --- made during Nehru's visit to Bhutan Nov. 1958.
