  • Description

King Faisal of Saudi Arabia arrived in Aswan, Upper Egypt, on Sunday (19 January) for talks with President Sadat at the end of a three-nation tour of Arab States by the Monarch.

During his visits to Syria, Jordan and Egypt the King pledged aid totalling more than GBP222 million sterling (more than 512 million U.S. dollars). Egypt is to receive GBP43 million sterling (100 million U.S. dollars) to help ensure supplies of essential goods -- mainly weapons which President Sadat wants to buy.

The President had travelled to the winter resort of Aswan the day before King Faisal's arrival and was on hand to greet the Monarch when he flew in from Jordan's capital, Amman.

The two leaders discussed problems affecting inter-Arab solidarity, world changes, the Arab-Israeli conflict and the energy crisis.

At the end of the visit on Monday (20 January) King Faisal announced, in a joint communique, that he would use his good offices to ensure continued Arab support for Egypt.

Suggestions that a summit meeting between Egypt, Syria, Jordan and the Palestine Liberation Organisation would be held in Saudi Arabia next month were discounted by Saudi Arabian sources.
