    United States athletes easily won the fourth U.S.-U.S.S.R. meet in Richmond, Virginia on Monday (3 March) by 171 to 106 points.

    Highlight of the evening was the performance by 22-year-old student Francis Larrieu who ran the fastest time ever in a women's mile event, either indoors or out.

    The new record is 4 minutes 28.5 seconds. She also set a new 1,500-metre record of 4 minutes 9.8 seconds.

    The women's steam won 77 points to the Soviet's 44, the largest margin in the competition's four-year history.

    In the men's competition American domination continued with stars such as Rick Wolhuter and Dwight Stones easily overcoming opposition to take their events.
