Background: Federal Nigerian leader Major-General Yakubu Gowon arrived at Dar El Beida Airport in Algiers on Tuesday (August 25) for the start of a four-day official visit.
He was greeted upon his arrival by Algerian President Houari Boumedienne, at whose invitation he is visiting the country.
A 21-gun salute welcomed Major-General Gowon as he stepped off the aircraft which had been escorted over Algerian skies by six Air Force jet fighters.
President Boumedienne and his guest, who was dressed in military uniform, stood at attention while a military band played the two national anthems.
The two leaders then inspected a guard of honour before the Federal Nigerian leader was introduced to members of the revolutionary council, the government and the diplomatic corps.
After a brief rest in the aircraft's salon of honour, President Boumedienne escorted his guest to the "People's Palace" in the centre of Algiers, where Major-General Gowon will stay during his visit to Algeria.
