    NEW ZEALAND FLAGS FLUTTERED ABOVE THE STREETS OF SAIGON, SOUTH VIETNAM'S CAPITAL, ON WEDNESDAY WHEN THE CITIZENS TURNED OUT TO WELCOMED THE NEW ZEALAND ARTILLERY UNIT.THE UNIT HAS COME TO FIGHT ALONGSIDE UNITED STATES, AUSTRALIAN AND VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT FORCES IN THE WAR AGAINST THE VIETCONG.

    THE NEW ZEALAND GUNNERS ARE MEMBERS OF THE 16TH FIELD REGIMENT, WHICH SERVED IN KOREA WITH THE COMMONWEALTH BRIGADE.THEY ARE EQUIPPED WITH 105-MILLIMETRE ITALIAN HOWITZERS.

    THE SOLDIERS RECEIVED A TRADITIONAL GREETING FROM THE GIRLS OF SAIGON.THEY CAME FORWARD AND GARLANDED THE MEN WITH FLOWERS AS THEY STOOD IN RANKS AFTER BEING INSPECTED.

    WATCHING THE PARADE IN SAIGON, AND TAKING PART IN THE INSPECTION, WAS NEW ZEALAND'S AMBASSADOR, SIR STEPHEN WEIR.HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE VIETNAMESE POLITICAL WELFARE CHIEF, GENERAL LINH QUANG VIEN.REPRESENTING THE UNITED STATES WAS GENERAL WILLIAM WESTMORELAND, COMMANDER OF THE AMERICAN FORCES IN SOUTH VIETNAM.
