Syria has been celebrating the fourth anniversary of the 1973 Middle East war, which the Arabs believe enabled their soldiers to regain their dignity and self-confidence. Official and public rallies were held in Damascus and other Syrian towns.
SYNOPSIS: Among those holding celebrations were members of the Baath Arab Socialist Party.
Major-General Mustapha Tlass, the Syrian Defence Minister and himself a member of the Baath party, was the guest of honour at this rally.
The rally, which was held on Thursday (6 October) climaxed with a major address given by General Tlass. He stressed the importance of Arab unity, and the need to settle differences between Arab states. But he said, "we do not stretch out our hands to salute Begin or any criminal hand stained with the blood of our martyrs." And, he warned, the establishment of relations with any country whatsoever must have regard to national sovereignty. Syrians, he said, do not allow any trusteeship over them. General Tlass called on all Arab countries to settle their differences and mobilise all their potential to face the enemy...Zionism.
