  • Description

THE SHOPKEEPER'S SPLINTER GROUP KNOWN AS THE TOUR DU PIN COMMITTEE HELD A MEETING ON SATURDAY AT BOURGOIN TO DISCUSS WHAT THEY SHOULD DO IN THE LIGHT OF THE OFFICIAL SHOPKEEPERS' UNION DECISION TO SUSPEND ALL FURTHER PROTEST ACTION UNTIL AFTER THE REFERENDUM NEXT SUNDAY.

GENERAL DE GAULLE'S GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN FACED WITH A SERIOUS OUTBREAK OF UNREST AMONG SHOPKEEPERS IN RECENT WEEKS, THOUGH THE SHOPKEEPERS HAVE IN THE PAST VOTED FOR HIM. THE OFFICIAL UNION HELD A ONE-DAY STRIKE ON APRIL 16TH AND THE GOVERNMENT HAS MADE CERTAIN CONCESSIONS SINCE THEN TO TRY AND PUT AN END TO THEIR GRIEVANCES ABOUT HIGH TAXES, INCREASED WORK AND RESTRICTED WELFARE BENEFITS. BUT THE STRIKE DID NOT SATISFY ALL THE SHOPKEEPERS. MR MAURICE MESNY HAS FORMED WHAT IS CALLED THE TOUR DU PIN COMMITTEE, WHICH HAS CALLED FOR FASTER, MORE DRASTIC ACTION FROM THE GOVERNMENT. A MEETING HELD AT BOURGOIN LAST WEEK ENDED IN A FULL SCALE RIOT, WHEN POLICE WERE CALLED IN TO STOP DEMONSTRATORS SACKING THE LOCAL TAX-OFFICE. AFTER THE RIOT ONE OF THE COMMITTEE'S LEADING MEMBERS, MR NICOUD, WAS ARRESTED AND SATURDAY'S MEETING WAS PARTLY DEVOTED TO PROTEST AGAINST THIS ARREST.

IT WAS DECIDED AT THE MEETING THAT THE OFFICIAL UNION HAS BEEN PARTY TO THE AGREEMENTS IMPOSING THE SYSTEM THAT IT IS NOW TRYING TO GET THE GOVERNMENT TO CHANGE, AND THAT THEREFORE INDEPENDENT ACTION WILL HAVE TO BE TAKEN BY MEMBERS AND FOLLOWERS OF THE COMMITTEE.
