INTRODUCTION: Boxing -- and in Thailand, national champion Saensak Muangsurin has retained his world junior welterweight title against United States challenger Monroe Brooks. But for the first three rounds, he didn't look as though he would last the fight -- let alone keep the title.

SYNOPSIS: The local crowd fell silent as they watched the challenger pound their hero almost senseless. Saensak tried desperately to keep away from an opening barrage of right swings, but eventually danced the wrong way and stepped into the path of a big one. It put him down for a mandatory count of eight.

But Saensak recovered, and slowly began to wear down Monroe by simply walking up to him and battering away incessantly. By the last round, the American challenger was obviously tired and severely punished, with his left eye almost completely closed. The champion sensed victory, and moved in for the kill--cheered on by a crowd yelling loudly for blood. Brooks went down under a barrage of head and body blows, and the referee stepped in to save him from further punishment by giving the fight to Saensak.

An exhausted Brooks said afterwards that Saensak was the strongest opponent he had ever fought.
