Background: An Electra Turbo-prop plane of American Airlines, en route from Boston carrying seventy one passengers and a crew of five, crashed on landing at La Guardia airport New York Sept 14, flipped over on its back, and burst into flames. The passengers and crew walked away from the wreck.

Airport rescue squads were on the scene within minutes, and sprayed the wreck with foam. Pilot Sheldon Pangburn was bringing the plane in to runway 31, the only one currently open due to extensive work now going on La Guardia. He said that as the plane on its final approach reached an eight foot dyke which separated the runway from Flushing Bay, "a gust of wind struck and drove the left wing down." The plane cartwheeled and turned over, slid for 500 ft, and came to a standstill on the grassy verge beside the tarmac. The plane immediately burst into flames.

Miss Maggie Fleming of London, UK, one of the two stewardesses, said "it seemed like a rough landing. I could feel the heat". She noticed the exit had been sprung by the crash, forced it open, and then assisted all passengers - hanging upside down - to unfasten their seatbelts, drop the eight feet to the floor (ceiling) of the plane, and then drop through the exit to the ground. Miraculously, no passengers were killed. Some were treated in a nearby hospital, for burns, others were attended in a hanger for cuts and bruises.
