NINETY-ONE PEOPLE HAVE DIED, 48 ARE INJURED AND 15 MISSING IN THE FLOODS AND STORMS WHICH HAVE LASHED NORTH-WEST ITALY FOR THE PAST THREE DAYS, ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL PROVISIONAL FIGURES RELEASED TODAY (MONDAY). CONTINUOUS CLOUDBURSTS HAVE SATURATED THE REGION, BUILDING UP LETHAL FORCES OF WATER THROUGHOUT THE MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS OF THE PIEDMONTESE ALPS.

THE VILLAGE OF VALLEMOSSO, A HILL VILLAGE NORTH OF TURIN, WAS IN THE CENTRE OF THE DISASTER ZONE. IT WAS THE MOST SERIOUSLY AFFECTED WHEN A DAM BROKE TO SEND THE WATERS OF THE RIVER STRONG CRASHING DOWN FROM THE HEAD OF A VALLEY. THE WATER SWEPT HOUSES WITH IT AND SET OFF DOZENS OF LANDSLIDES. ROAD AND RAIL LINKS WERE CUT. A NUMBER OF OTHER VILLAGES IN THE REGION WERE ALSO CUT OFF AND RESCUERS ARE ONLY NOW ABLE TO GET THROUGH.

TROOPS AND HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN BATTLING TO RESCUE THE TRAPPED VICTIMS. IN BIELLA, WHICH HAS BECOME THE CENTRE OF RELIEF OPERATIONS, RAIN FELL AGAIN TODAY. CASUALTIES HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO HOSPITALS IN BIELLA.

THE RAILWAY LINE BETWEEN MILAN AND TURIN WAS BLOCKED IN THREE PLACES. MANY ROADS IN THE PO VALLEY WERE BLOCKED BY DOZENS OF BROKEN BRIDGES, TWISTED FALLEN TREES AND UPROOTED TELEPHONE POLES.

THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF VENICE WAS FLOODED TODAY FOR THE THIRD TIME IN THREE DAYS AS A STRONG SIROCCO WIND PREVENTED THE HIGH TIDE FROM FLOWING OUT OF THE CITY'S LAGOON. FLOOD-WARNING SIRENS AGAIN ALERTED THE CITY IN TIME FOR SHOPKEEPERS AND PEOPLE IN GROUND-FLOOR FLATS TO TAKE THEIR BELONGINGS TO SAFETY.

THE CITY'S ST. MARK'S SQUARE WAS HEAVILY FLOODED YESTERDAY (SUNDAY), BUT TOWN COUNCIL OFFICIALS SAID THAT NONE OF VENICE'S ART TREASURES HAD BEEN DAMAGED.

THE FLOODING IS THE WORST IN NORTH ITALY SINCE THE NIGHT OF OCTOBER 9, 1965, WHEN A DAM AT VAJONT BURST AND SENT MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF WATER INTO THE VALLEY BELOW, CLAIMING SOME 2,000 LIVES.
