    SCHENK TOOK THE CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER WINNING THE 5,000 METRES AND SHARING FOURTH PLACE IN THE 500 METRES YESTERDAY AND THEN WINNING THE 1,500 METRES TAKING ANOTHER FOURTH PLACE IN THE 10,000 METRES TODAY.

    ANOTHER DUTCH SKATER, CEES VERKERK, WAS SECOND IN THE OVERALL PLACINGS AND THE RUSSIAN, VALERI KAPLAN, WAS THIRD.

    VERKERK WAS ONE OF THE FOUR TO SHARE FOURTH PLACE IN THE 500 METRES AND DASHED IN THIRD IN THE 5,000 METRES EVENT YESTERDAY. TODAY, HE GAINED THIRD PLACE IN THE 1,500 METRES AND SECOND IN THE 10,000 METRES EVENTS.

    KAPLAN HAD WON THE 500 METRES AND WAS, IN FACT, PLACED SECOND - BEHIND SCHENK AND AHEAD OF VERKERK - AT THE END OF THE FIRST DAY. HE WAS SECOND IN TODAY'S 1,500 METRES EVENT.

    ANOTHER STRONG CONTENDER WAS EDUARD MATUSEVITCH, OF USSR, AS WAS JOHNNY NILSSON, OF SWEDEN, WHO WON THE 10,000 METRES TODAY.
