  • Description

Three thousands employees at the headquarters of the East African Railways Corporation in Nairobi are on strike because the Corporation has failed to pay their June salaries.

They stopped work on Friday (28 June). The secretary of the Railway African Union (Kenyan branch), Mr. John Mollo, told a meeting of workers on Saturday (29 June) that there would be a total work stoppage on Monday if the salaries were not paid over the weekend. Control workers, telephone operators and computer personnel had continued working normally.

The workers say that this is the third time this year their salaries have not been paid on time.

The Corporation's Resident Director in Kenya, Mr. W. Kasera, said that the Kenya Region had not remitted any money to the Headquarters account since March, while Uganda and Tanzania sent in money every month. He alleged that Kenya Region had been transferring money to a secret bank account in Nairobi. He promised that all available funds were being mobilized to pay the workers.
