  • Description

Preparations are well in hand for France's first parliamentary elections since 1968. Voting day is March II, but already thousands of large party posters have appeared throughout Paris, and in the provinces. They're displayed not only on the usual hoardings, but in prominent positions on buildings and at major intersections. The ruling Gaullists and their allies, the Independent Republicans and the Centrists, at present hold 360 of the 487 seats in the National Assembly, but a public opinion poll conducted on Friday (2 February) suggests that 47 per cent of prospective voters favour the left-wing opposition...a ten per cent lead over the Gaullists. The poll had given rise to fresh speculation about the likelihood of a coalition of Socialists, Communists, and left-wing Radicals. The Government parties had their lowest figure yet, recorded in the poll...37 per cent, compared with 43 per cent early in January. The Centrist Group, the "Reformers", increased their support to 16 per cent.

SYNOPSIS: In Paris preparations are well in hand for the forthcoming parliamentary elections on II March... the first since 1968. One of the most noticeable sings of the preparations has been the appearance throughout Paris, and in the provinces as well, of thousands of political posters. The opposition Contrist Group, "The reformers", as well as the Communists and Socialists, have all embarked on extensive poster campaigns.

A public opinion poll conducted on Friday suggested that 47 per cent of prospective voters now favour the left-wing opposition...a ten per cent lead over the ruling Gaullists. This has given rise to fresh speculation about the likelihood of a coalition of Socialists, Communists, and left-wing Radicals. The Gaullists, Independent Republicans, and Centrists....who have held power since 1958....hold 360 of the 487 seats in the French National Assembly.
