  • Description

ANOTHER RIOT AT A FOOTBALL MATCH. THIS TIME IT WAS IN ATHENS, WHERE 25,000 FANS SET FIRE TO A STADIUM ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT DURING THE SEMI-FINAL OF THE GREEK CUP. THEY BECAME ANGRY BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT THE MATCH HAD BEEN "FIXED".
IN THEIR FURY, THE SPECTATORS TORE DOWN FENCES, SURGED ACROSS THE PITCH AND BROKE INTO CLUB PREMISES, SETTING FURNITURE ALIGHT AND SMASHING DOORS AND WINDOWS.
THE NEXT DAY THE STADIUM LOOKED AS IF IT HAD BEEN HIT BY A TORNADO. OFFICIALS OF THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION PUT THE DAMAGE AT GBP10,000.
IT WAS TOWARDS THE END OF THE MATCH -- OLYMPIAKOS VS PANATHINAIKOS -- THAT THE SPECTATORS BECAME ANGRY, SUSPECTING THAT THE PLAYERS HAD "FIXED" THE RESULT AS A DRAW SO THAT THE GAME COULD BE PLAYED AGAIN.
WITH TEN MINUTES TO GO, POLICE STOPPED THE MATCH IN A VAIN EFFORT TO CALM THE CROWD. FANS SHOUTED "PERU, PERU," A REFERENCE TO THE DISASTER WHICH FOLLOWED AN OLYMPIC QUALIFYING MATCH IN LIMA A FEW WEEKS AGO. GREEK POLICE, GREATLY OUTNUMBERED, COULD NOT HALT THE CROWD. FOUR POLICEMEN WERE HURT, IT WAS LATER REPORTED.
