Background: DUTCH NEW GUINEA, WITH AN AREA OF 159,000 SQUARE MILES OF SWAMP, HILLS, JUNGLES AND FERTILE VALLEYS, HAS A POPULATION OF ALMOST 700,000, AND OF THEM NEARLY A THIRD ARE NOT AWARE OF ANY GOVERNMENT.

EVEN THE TWO-THIRDS WHO COME INTO SOME CONTACT WITH GOVERNMENT AUTHORITY LIVE IN ANCIENT WAYS AND ARE DIVIDED INTO SMALL GROUPS OF A FEW THOUSANDS, SPEAKING NEARLY 200 LANGUAGES. THE VISNEWS CAMERAMAN WHO RECENTLY FLEW TO ARFAK MOUNTAIN AREA IN NORTH-WEST GUINEA CAME ACROSS A TYPICAL MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY.

THE MOUNTAIN IS 6,000 FEET HIGH AND WAS REACHED BY A GEOLOGICAL SURVEY HELICOPTER FROM MANOKWARI IN AN HOUR. TO THE PEOPLE THEMSELVES MANOKWARI IS A EIGHT-DAY WALK AWAY. PLANES ARE THE ONLY POSSIBLE COMMUNICATION FOR FOREIGNERS. THE PEOPLE KNOW PLANES BUT THEMSELVES DO NOT USE EVEN WHEELS. THEY HAVE ALSO PASSED OVER THE STONE AGE TO IRON AXES BROUGHT IN FROM OVERSEAS. THEY DO NOT BUILD BOATS BUT USE CATAMARANS. BUT THEIR HOUSES ARE CLEVERLY BUILT OUT OF WOOD AND BAMBOO, ON STILTS. A FEW MISSIONARY CAMPS AND GOVERNMENT PATROLS COME INTO CONTACT WITH THEM.

THE HUNTING WEAPONS INCLUDE GUNS, BUT BOWS AND ARROWS ARE MORE COMMON. IT IS SAID THEY ARE NOT VERY GOOD SHOTS WITH THEIR ARROWS, BUT ARE EXPERTS IN STALKING AND TRACKING ANIMALS AND IN MOVING UP VERY CLOSE TO THE ANIMALS BEFORE SHOOTING.
