    THE KENYA INDEPENDENCE CONFERENCE, STILL DEADLOCKED OVER THE CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUE, TODAY (TUESDAY) MADE SOME PROGRESS WITH AN AGREEMENT ON THE SO-CALLED COASTAL STRIP. THE STRIP, WHICH INCLUDES KENYA'S MAIN PORT, MOMBASSA, USED TO BELONG TO ZANZIBAR, BUT TODAY THE SULTAN OF ZANZIBAR AGREED TO CEDE HIS RIGHTS IN THE AREA FOR THREE-QUARTERS OF A MILLION POUNDS. IN RETURN, THE KENYA GOVERNMENT PROMISED THAT AFTER INDEPENDENCE, IT WOULD GUARD FREEDOM OF WORSHIP, THE POSITION OF THE CHIEF KADHI, THE TEACHING OF ARABIC IN SCHOOLS, AND FREEHOLD TITLES TO LAND.

    FORMAL AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED THIS AFTERNOON IN THE CONFERENCE ROOM AT MARLBOROUGH HOUSE, LONDON. PRESENT AT THE SIGNING WERE THE BRITISH COLONIAL SECRETARY, MR. DUNCAN SANDYS; THE SULTAN OF ZANZIBAR; THE PRIME MINISTER OF KENYA, MR. JOMO KENYATTA; AND THE PRIME MINISTER OF ZANZIBAR, MR. MOHAMED SHAMTE.
