  • Description

Fencers from four Asian countries began competing in the first Asian Fencing Championship in Teheran, the Iranian capital on Saturday, (October 13th).

Forty men and women began duelling in the foil, sabre and eppe events at the Mohamed Reza Shah Pahliva stadium.

The Asian fencing championship was first proposed at the Olympics in Tokyo in 1964, and was formally established by the members of the International Fencing Confederation last year.

The four-day competition is to take place every two years. The country which takes home the most medals also wins the right to stage the next championship.

Israeli entrants were withdrawn from the championship, and competitors from South Korea and Hong Kong, which had accepted invitations, did not appear.

Mofid Dana of Lebanon won the gold medal in the Men's individual Eppe event. The silver medallist was K. Eton of Japan, and the bronze went to Pirus Adamiat of Iran.

The gold medal in the Women's Individual Foil event was won by Mahwash Shafaei of Iran. The silver was won by Naka Zono of Japan, and bronze by Jila Almasi of Iran.
