Background: A gunman died in a shoot-out with police in Sydney, Australia, on January 31 after taking four hostages on a terrifying car ride through suburban streets. A policeman was shot between the eyes and seriously wounded, and two hostages were also hit by gunfire. The drama occurred after the man held ten staff and a customer at gunpoint in a bank. He then bundled four men hostages into a car, as police marksmen stood helpless nearby, and tried to weave his way through city traffic. The incident began at three in the afternoon, when the gunman held up another bank. He fled from there, chased by an employee and police and ran into the Commonwealth Bank where he held eleven captives; six men and five women. As he ran in, he fired a shot. Soon afterwards, he released the women, one of the whom was treated for shock. Later, taking five women hostages with him, he left the bank and ordered a woman out of her car. He then bundled four of the men into the car and set off on the terror ride. During the ride, after a hostage had been ordered to phone the hostage's girlfriend, a girl was picked up by the car at a beach and a hostage was released to make room. The shoot-out eventually came to an end when the car was force to halt at a raised bridge, and surrounded by unmarked police cars. The two injured hostages were taken to hospital with superficial injuries.
