    THIS FILM SHOWS THE ELECTRON-BEAM WELDING PROCESS DEMONSTRATED BY THE MUNICH FIRM S.K.M. (STEIGERWALD-KRAUSS-MAFFEI); ITS MACHINES ARE ALREADY IN USE IN SEVERAL INDUSTRIAL COUNTRIES, INCLUDING THE UNITED KINGDOM, WHERE THEY ARE EMPLOYED BY THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION.

    SHOWN IN THE FILM IS A GENERAL-PURPOSE E.B. (ELECTRON BEAM) WELDER, CONSISTING OF A LARGE VACUUM CHAMBER INTO WHICH THE COMPONENTS TO BE WELDED ARE PLACED, AND AN E.B. GENERATING GUN, WHICH FIRES A HIGH-ENERGY BEAM AT THE MATERIAL, MELTING AND FUSING IT INSTANTLY.

    IN OUTER SPACE, WHERE A VACUUM IS THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, ONLY THE GENERATING GUN WOULD BE NEEDED, AND E.B. WELDING IS THEREFORE THE NATURAL PROCESS FOR ASSEMBLING SPACE-CRAFT IN SPACE. EXPERIMENTS IN THIS FIELD BY THE CREW OF SOYUZ-6 SUGGEST THAT THE SOVIET UNION PLANS TO USE E.B. WELDING TO BUILD ITS PROPOSED ORBITING SPACE STATION.

    THE SOVIET NEWS AGENCY TASS, COMMENTING ON THE EXPERIMENTS, POINTED OUT THAT WEIGHTLESSNESS COMPLICATES EVEN ELEMENTARY OPERATIONS. ESPECIALLY THOSE REQUIRING REVOLVING MOVEMENTS. FOR THIS REASON THE USE OF NUTS AND BOLTS WAS HARDLY ACCEPTABLE.

    THE TASS COMMENTATOR CONTINUED: "A WHOLE NUMBER OF WELDING METHODS -- BY ELECTRONIC BEAM OR PLASMA ARC -- GIVE THE COSMONAUT A POSSIBILITY TO USE A SINGLE INSTRUMENT BOTH TO JOIN METALS AND CUT THEM".
