Background: KIEL, IN WEST GERMANY, IS ALWAYS A POPULAR PORT OF CALL FOR SEAMEN -- AND EVERY YEAR THE ANNUAL REGATTA WEEK HELD THERE ATTRACTS VESSELS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. THIS YEAR HAS BEEN NO EXCEPTION, AND WHEN THE WEEK BEGAN ON SATURDAY, VESSELS FROM AS FAR AFIELD AS CHILE AND THE UNITED STATES WERE BERTHED AT THE QUAYSIDE. THE CREWS LOOK FORWARD TO THE KIEL REGATTA WEEK AS IT MEANS A LOT OF SHORE-LEAVE -- AND THE PEOPLE OF KIEL ARE RENOWNED FOR THEIR HOSPITALITY FOR SEAMEN.

AMONG THE MOST INTERESTING OF THE VESSELS VISITING KIEL IS THE CHILEAN FOUR-MASTED SCHOONER "ESMERALDA". THIS MUCH-TRAVELLED SAILING SHIP IS A TRAINING VESSEL FOR THE CHILEAN NAVY. DESPITE HER NOW-OUTDATED FORM OF PROPULSION, THE "ESMERALDA" WAS BUILT ONLY THIRTEEN YEARS AGO, BUT IN THAT TIME SHE HAS VISITED PORTS ALL OVER THE WORLD ON THE COURSE OF HER TRAINING CRUISES.

THE WEST GERMAN TRAINING SHIP "GORCH FOCH" IS ALSO BERTHED AT KIEL. SHE IS ANOTHER TRAINING SHIP DEPENDING PRINCIPALLY ON SAIL -- AND IS ALSO A NEW VESSEL, HAVING BEEN LAUNCHED IN 1958. THE "GORCH FOCH" HAS A COMPLEMENT OF 10 OFFICERS, 56 RATINGS, AND 140 CADETS -- ALL OF WHOM WILL HAVE SOME TIME OFF THIS WEEK TO ENJOY THEMSELVES IN KIEL.

FROM BRITAIN HAS COME THE CRUISER H.M.S. "LION". SHE IS ONE OF THE LARGER VESSELS AT KIEL THIS WEEK. THE "LION" HAS A CREW OF 717. THE UNITED STATES IS REPRESENTED BY THE GUIDED MISSILE ARMED DESTROYER U.S.S. "CLAUDE V. RICKETTS".

SIX OTHER COUNTRIES, BELGIUM, DENMARK, FRANCE, NORWAY, SWEDEN AND SPAIN, ALSO HAVE WARSHIPS AT KIEL FOR THE WEEK. FOR ALL IT'S A WEEK OF RELAXATION. ON MOST DAYS THE YACHTING EVENT WILL PROVIDE A SPECTACLE FOR SAILORS NOT ACCUSTOMED TO SMALL BOAT HANDLING.
