    A HEAVY EARTHQUAKE HIT GISBORNE AT LUNCHTIME ON SATURDAY AND KEPT THE CITY WOBBLING FOR TEN MINUTES.

    THE QUAKE, WHICH WAS OF MAGNITUDE 6.2 ON THE RICHTER SCALE, CAUSED SEVERAL THOUSANDS OF POUNDS WORTH OF DAMAGE TO BUILDING IN THE CITY BUT SO FAR NO INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. PEOPLE FLED FROM BUILDINGS AS THE QUAKE STARTED, TRAFFIC CAME TO A HALT AND THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY WAS CUT OFF. HOUSEHOLDERS REPORTED FALLEN CHIMNEYS, BURST TANKS AND SOME BUILDINGS SHOWED CRACKS SEVERAL INCHES WIDE. IN CITY HOTELS, THOUSANDS OF GLASSES WERE SMASHED.

    FOR GISBORNE, WHICH HAS A POPULATION OF 25,000, THIS WAS THE BIGGEST QUAKE TO HIT THE AREA SINCE THE 1931 QUAKE AT NAPIER WHICH DEMOLISHED MUCH OF THE CITY AND KILLED 256 PEOPLE. GISBORNE IS IN THE VOLCANIC BELT WHICH STRETCHES ACROSS THE NORTH ISLAND OF NEW ZEALAND.
