  • Description

President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and King Hussein of Jordan have agreed that a future Palestinian state should be linked with Jordan. The announcement was made by an Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman who was reporting on weekend talks between the two leaders.

SYNOPSIS: The two leaders discussed Middle East peace moves in the Egyptian port of Alexandria. King Hussein's visit came within days of talks with King Khalid in Saudi Arabia which were aimed at co-ordinating Arab points of view on the Middle East situation.

President Sadat has always backed proposals for creating a Palestinian state on the west bank of the river Jordan and the Gaza Stirp; areas presently occupied by Israel. In talks with King Hussein he's reported to have favoured an early link between the proposed state and Jordan.

President Sadat is apparently keen to have the links agreed to before the Geneva Middle East peace conference is convened again. King Hussein said at the weekend that such links should be established after Israel had withdrawn from the occupied land.

Before the latest talks King Hussein had said the Arabs had given all they could to serve peace in the Middle East and could give no more. He said the Arabs should achieve genuine solidarity in defining their conception of peace, saying it was unreasonable they should appear to have divergent opinions while Israel presented one unified opinion.
