  • Description

Lebanese President Suleiman Franjieh arrived in Damascus on Saturday (7 February) on a visit that will set the "political seal" on Syria's intervention to end the Lebanon's nine months of bloody fighting.
President Franjieh was met by his Syrian counterpart, Hafez Al-Assad, on his arrival. It is only the third time the two leaders have met since President Assad assumed power five years ago.
The visit emphasises the greater role Syria and its Palestinian allies are now playing and seem likely to go on playing in the affairs of Syria's neighbour.
The muscle behind Syria's repeated mediation efforts in Lebanon came last month when regular Palestinian troops based in Syria went across the border to impose a powerful view and an outside presence in the divided country.
According to Palestinian sources, the force is about 2,000 strong and will be withdrawn as soon as Lebanese authorities can control the situation themselves.
Lebanese political leaders agree that the level of violence in their country had deteriorated so badly that only outside intervention saved it from tearing itself to pieces.
The Lebanese delegation, which also includes Premier Rashid Karami, will stay in Syria only one day.
Details of the Syrian sponsored agreement, on which the hopes of future peace rest, have not yet been released.
