Background: In the Ivory Coast, on the west-coast of Africa, a thirty-five thousand seat sports stadium was opened at Abidjan on Sunday (14 January). It's claimed to have the best night-lighting facilities in Africa.
SYNOPSIS: The stadium has been named after Monsieur Felix Houphouet-Boigny, who has been president since independence was declared in 1960.
Builders have taken twenty months to finish the work of converting an old stadium. The new construction has cost more than sixteen and a half million dollars. Its main feature is the powerful floodlight system mounted on eight masts around the stadium. Each mast weighs twenty tonnes. Along the front edge of two stands, more floodlights provide ground lighting. The builders claim the over-all lighting system ranks the nest sports stadium any where in the world.
President Houphouet-Boigny was given a big welcome when he arrived to open the stadium. High school children gave youth parade alongside many of the country's sportsmen..against the backdrop of the ultra-modern stands and a highly sophisticated scoreboard.
After opening the stadium, the President met local athletes and had a chance to inspect the eight running lanes including the football pitch that among the range of facilities, will get the most regular use. The President then watched the celebration parade.
The opening event was to be an international football tournament lasting a week, and featuring such teams as Ivory Coast champions Africa Sports, St. Btienne of France and from Bulgaria, C.S.K. SOFIA. And on Thursday (18 January), in lighter vein, a team consisting was to play a side of resident Ambassadors.
