    FIREMEN BATTLED AGAINST A BLAZE AT A EUROPEAN OIL STORAGE INSTALLATION NEAR SAIGON ON MONDAY, FOLLOWING A VIET CONG PRE-DRAWN ATTACK ON THE DEPOT. THE VIET CONG, USING RECOIL-LESS CANNON, LOBBED MORE THAN 20 ROUNDS INTO THE INSTALLATION AND THE ADJACENT US NAVY BASE, SETTING FIRE TO ONE OF THE OIL TANKERS.

    THE TANK FARM, OPERATED BY THE SHELL OIL COMPANY AT NHA BE, ABOUT FIVE MILES SOUTH-EAST OF SAIGON ON THE BANK OF THE SAIGON RIVER, HAS BEEN A FREQUENT TARGET OF ATTACK FOR VIET CONG. THE SURROUNDING AREA, KNOWN AS THE RUNG SAT SPECIAL ZONE, CONSISTS OF DENSE, MUGGY MANGROVE SWAMPS.

    THE US NAVY BASE SUFFERED ONLY LIGHT DAMAGE. THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF INJURY AT THE SHELL INSTALLATIONS AND CASUALTIES AT THE NAVAL BASE WERE DESCRIBED AS LIGHT.

    THE ATTACK AT NHA BE WAS ONE OF THE SEVERAL VIET CONG ASSAULTS IN THE SAIGON AREA ON SUNDAY NIGHT.
