Background: This is Malaya's biggest and newly-opened dam built at Klang Gates, some 20 miles from the capital Kuala Lumpur. The 105 feet high and 370 feet wide dam, taking ten years to complete, is to augment the present inadequate water supply in the capital and help prevent floods in the area.

With U.S. aid, new engineering techniques and equipment were used in Malaya for the first time. The dam will hold 4,000 million gallons of water - more than adequate to meet the demands of Kuala Lumpur and suburbs during the annual drought period.

At the opening, Minister of Works Sardon said the new dam was symbolic of the progress being made by Malaya in its two years of independence.

Homer Byington Junior, the American ambassador, was the only diplomat present at the opening ceremony. Others had to be excluded for lack of space.

A Moslem priest said prayers and the Sultan of Selangor, in whose central Malayan state the dam is situated, prayed with open outstretched arms. Amid a fanfare, the Sultan then opened the dam letting out a gush of water - the first gallons of the millions that will flow to the capital and its suburbs.
