    Senegal's President, Leopold Senghor, arrived in Tokyo on Monday (16 April) at the beginning of a six day state visit -- aimed at cementing bilateral relations between the two countries. The Senegalese are hoping that the Japanese will contribute to their country's economic and social development programme. The capital of Senegal, Dakar, is a tax-free zone, designed to attract foreign capital.

    SYNOPSIS: Monsieur Senghor and his party were greeted at Tokyo International Airport by Emperor Hirohito. President Senghor is making his first visit to Japan -- the first state visit to Japan by an African leader in eight years. Monsieur Senghor also met Crown Prince Akihito and the Crown Princess Michiko on his arrival.

    Senegal launched a four-year economic and social development plan in 1977. The President was expected to call on private Japanese industries to encourage technological assistance to Senegal.

    President Senghor who held his first round of talks with Japanese Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira shortly after his arrival said meetings and consultations at various levels during his stay would strengthen co-operation between Senegal and Japan.
