  • Description

Britain's Jim Watt has retained his European Lightweight boxing title in Madrid with an easy points victory over Perico Fernandez, of spain.

SYNOPSIS: In the first round, Watt, wearing the dark shorts, ran into some surprising, and heavy, flak from his opponent. It was the Spaniard who stormed into attack at the start. To the dismay of the handful of Scots who'd travelled to see the fight, his onslaught brought Watt to his knees just before the end of the round. Watt seemed more started than hurt.

For the rest of the fight, the blond champion never looked in trouble. He was clearly in a class above Fernandez. Watt pounded the Spaniard mercilessly, and, in the 10th round, Fernandez took a standing count...and still the Scotsman piled on the punishment.

Round 12.....and by now, the Spaniard didn't seem to want to know much about fighting any more. He took another compulsory count....and again, Watt waded in, increasing Fernandez's distress.

Round 15....and the final round was again Watt's all the way. He kept on clubbing right and left.....his southpaw stance clearly worrying the Spaniard.

And, on the bell, Watt had no doubts about his victory. He retained his title....and looked in danger of being hurt more by his jubilant supporters than he had by the Spaniard.
