    SOUTH KOREAN RIOT POLICE USING TEAR GAS AND CLUBS BROKE UP A DEMONSTRATION OF STUDENTS IN SEOUL ON SUNDAY. BOYCOTTING A GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED CEREMONY COMMEMORATING THE OVERTHROW OF THE SYNGMAN RHEE GOVERNMENT IN 1960, A THOUSAND STUDENTS GATHERED OUTSIDE CITY HALL IN THE CENTRE OF THE CAPITAL. THEY HEARD SPEAKERS DENOUNCE THE GOVERNMENT FOR ITS EFFORTS TO RE-ESTABLISH NORMAL RELATIONS WITH JAPAN. THE SPEAKERS SAID THE STUDENTS OPPOSED "HUMILIATING DIPLOMACY" TOWARDS ANY COUNTRY. THEY COMPLAINED TOO ABOUT THE POLICE SURVEILLANCE WHICH THEY ALLEGE IS BEING PLACED ON THEIR SCHOOLS. THEY SAY THAT PLAIN-CLOTHES POLICEMEN ARE MASQUERADING AS STUDENTS.

    AFTER THE MEETING THE STUDENTS DECIDED TO STAGE A MASSIVE STREET MARCH. AS THEY BEGAN TO FORM UP THE RIOT POLICE MOVED DOWN THE STREET IN AN EFFORT TO STOP THEM. HOWEVER THE STUDENTS BROKE THROUGH THE CORDONS AND SCUFFLING BROKE OUT. TEAR-GAS BOMBS AND TRUNCHEON ATTACKS BY THE POLICE WERE RECIPROCATED BY THE HURLING OF ROCKS AND STONES BY THE STUDENTS. AS THE DEMONSTRATION WAS GRADUALLY DISPERSED FIFTY-SEVEN PEOPLE WERE LED AWAY TO WAITING POLICE VEHICLES, WHILE SEVERAL OTHERS WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL SUFFERING FROM INJURIES.

    ON MONDAY VIOLENCE ERUPTED AGAIN IN THE CENTRE OF SEOUL. DESPITE WARNINGS FROM THE SOUGH KOREAN GOVERNMENT THAT IS WOULD NOT TOLERATE FURTHER STREET DEMONSTRATIONS, THREE HUNDRED STUDENTS MARCHED DOWN ONE OF SEOUL'S MAIN THOROUGHFARES. AGAIN RIOT POLICE WERE ON THE ALERT AND THEY MOVED FORWARD AS THE STUDENTS APPROACHED THE PRESIDENTIAL MANSION.

    (STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR SOME WEEKS IN SEOUL. THE RIOTS OF SUNDAY AND MONDAY SHOWN ON THE FILM WERE FOLLOWED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WITH FURTHER DISTURBANCES. TWO THOUSAND STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED IN PROTEST AT THE PREVIOUS TWO DAY'S ARREST. THREE HUNDRED OF THEM BROKE THROUGH A POLICE CORDON, MARCHED INTO THE CITY AND SEIZED A TRAMCAR. IN IT THEY TRIED TO SMASH THROUGH ANOTHER POLICE LINE BUT WERE STOPPED. ABOUT A HUNDRED AND TWENTY PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED AND TWO PEOPLE WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED.)
