  • Description

The French challenger for the America's Cup, one of the world's ocean yacht racing classics, has arrived in Newport, Rhode Island to begin preparations for its challenge in August.

The United States have still not decided on a boat with which to defend the America's Cup. The three main contenders, "Enterprise", "independence" and "Courageous" have gathered at Newport for trials to decide the defending yacht.

SYNOPSIS: The French boat, "France II", was accompanied by France's unsuccessful challenger in 1970 and 1974, the "France". Both boats were built for Baron Marcel Bich, a wealthy ball-point pen manufacturer. Baron bich says he's determined to end the United States monopoly f the cup, which has been held in America since the competition started in 1851.

Colonel Arthur Newell of the Newport Artillery Company was waiting to welcome the French boats as they tied up in Newport Harbour on Sunday (12 June). The French face a stiff task in their challenge this year...they first have to win a series against two Australian and one Swedish yacht before they tackle the American defender. "France II" is being skippered by the baron's son, Bruno, who was beaten by the Australians in the 1974 elimination series.

France II had already suffered before reaching Newport....the boat was damaged during practice off Hyeres, a southern French resort, and repairs took 10 days. The two Australian challengers, "Gretel II" and "Southern Cross", and the Swedish boat, "Sverige", will join "France II" in a series of races in August to decide which yacht will challenge for the coveted trophy.

But Sunday was the French crew's day as they were taken on a welcoming tour of Newport, before starting on the hard work of preparing for the first series.
