Background: THOUSANDS OF KENYA AFRICANS SLEPT IN LONG QUEUES THROUGH LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) DETERMINED TO TAKE PART IN THE GENERAL ELECTION WHICH WILL DECIDE THE COUNTRY'S FUTURE.

AT DAWN THE MEN AND WOMEN SURGED FORWARD FOR THE FIRST DAY OF VOTING FOR THE SENATE. ALTHOUGH ELECTORAL OFFICERS WERE DEALING WITH 1,000 PEOPLE AN HOUR AT SOME STATIONS, THOUSANDS MORE REMAINED QUEUEING OUTSIDE THE POLLING STATIONS AS THEY CLOSED DOWN.

EAGERNESS IN SOME CASES BROUGHT POLICE ON THE SCENE TO RESTORE ORDER. BUT LATE LAST NIGHT A POLICE SPOKESMAN SAID: "IT HAS BEEN VERY QUIET AND ORDERLY. WE ONLY HOPE IT STAYS THIS WAY."
IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 1,750,000 PEOPLE WILL VOTE IN THESE ELECTIONS WHERE 60 CANDIDATES ARE COMPETING FOR THE REMAINING 26 SEATS. THE THIRD AND MOST IMPORTANT STAGE OF THE ELECTION IS TO BE HELD OVER THE WEEKEND WHEN THE PEOPLE GO AGAIN TO THE POLLS TO CHOOSE THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE GOVERNMENT.
