    IN THE CONGO (LEOPOLDVILLE), GOVERNMENT TROOPS HAVE FREED 17 PORTUGUESE WHO WERE HELD HOSTAGE FOR 20 MONTHS BY REBELS IN THE NORTHERN REGION. THEY WERE FLOWN TO LEOPOLDVILLE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), WHERE THEY WERE REUNITED WITH RELATIVES.

    THE PRISONERS, WHO INCLUDED FIVE WOMEN AND FOUR CHILDREN, WERE ALL IN GOOD HEALTH. ONE OF THEM SAID THEY WERE TREATED FAIRLY WELL AND THE REBELS WERE UNDER STRICT ORDERS NOT TO HARM THEM.

    THEY HAD BEEN HELD AT THE TOWN OF BONDO, A REBEL STRONGHOLD WHICH WAS OVERRUN BY GOVERNMENT FORCES, LED BY SPANISH MERCENARIES, DURING AN OPERATION LAST WEEK. THE REBELS, NUMBERING ABOUT 300, FLED IN TO THE BUSH.

    WHAT OF THE FUTURE? SOME SAY THEY WILL RETURN TO PORTUGAL, OTHERS WILL REMAIN IN LEOPOLDVILLE FOR THE TIME BEING, WHILE THE REST HOPE TO RETURN TO BONDO ONE DAY.
