United States bombing raids have continued over Hanoi and its suburbs during the past two weeks and pilots report destroying a thermal power plant, vital bridges on routes to the People's Republic of China and airfield runways -- sometimes using 2,000 pound bombs thought to be guided to their targets by laser beams.

This official North Vietnamese film shows Hanoi residents sheltering in manholes and gunners manning anti-aircraft batteries during a raid by four U.S. Phantom jets on May 18.

The North Vietnamese say the aircraft swept across the city at low altitude dropping pieces of aluminium and other objects to confuse radar sites before releasing their payloads. One anti-aircraft battery claimed to have shot down a Phantom about 2 miles (2.8kms) from the centre of Hanoi City.

North Vietnamese sources also said a "new type" of bomb, weighing 900 pounds, was found unexploded near a city cement factory. Factory workers, the sources said, later dismantled it.

United States military sources say they have bombed strictly military targets, but the North Vietnamese say the jets have bombed residential areas, schools, hospitals, and factories as well.

There have been more than 300 bombing raids in the Hanoi and Haiphong areas since April 16, the North Vietnamese add.
