  • Description

FILIPINO STUDENTS STAGED A NOISY DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY ON MONDAY (23 SEPTEMBER) IN PROTEST AGAINST WHAT THE CLAIMED WAS AMERICAN AND BRITISH INTERFERENCE IN THE SABAH ISSUE. SABAH, FORMERLY BRITISH NORTH BORNEO, IS NOW UNDER MALAYSIAN CONTROL, BUT IS CLAIMED AS PHILIPPINES TERRITORY.

THE STUDENTS, FROM THE PHILIPPINES COLLEGE OF COMMERCE, SAID THEY WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE "TURNING DOWN" OF PHILIPPINE'S EFFORT TO RESOLVE THE DISPUTE, THE REPORTED SUPPORT OF AMERICA FOR MALAYSIA, AND THE REPORTED MOVE BY BRITAIN TO SEND JET FIGHTERS TO SABAH.

THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARMED WITH PLACARDS AND AN EFFIGY OF JOHN BULL, WHICH WAS LATER BURNED.

LATER, THEY SET OUT FOR THE RESIDENCE OF THE MALAYSIAN AMBASSADOR, IN SUBURBAN MAKATI, BUT HEAVY RAIN PREVENTED ANY TROUBLE WITH THE POLICE STANDING BY THERE.
