    Background: IN LAGOS, NIGERIA, POLICE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A TWO- WEEK HUNT FOR UNLICENCED DRIVERS AND VEHICLES. IT HAS INVOLVED THOUSANDS OF PRIVATE MOTORISTS, TAXI DRIVERS AND TRANSPORT COMPANIES.

    THE CHECK ON DOCUMENTS BEGAN AT THE END OF LAST WEEK AND WITHIN THREE DAYS THE LAGOS CITY COUNCIL REPORTED THAT 34,000 VEHICLES AND DRIVING HAD BEEN RENEWED - A BOOST TOT HE CITY'S TREASURY OF ABOUT GBP46,000.

    THE POLICE CHECK HAS CREATED ABNORMAL CONDITIONS FOR THE CITY'S TRAFFIC. MOST OFFENDERS HAVE TAKEN THEIR CARS OFF THE ROAD WITH THE RESULT ROADS ARE ALMOST EMPTY IN THE MORNINGS. BUT IN THE EVENINGS, WHEN THE POLICE MOVE INTO ACTION WITH ON-THE-ROAD-CHECKS, THERE HAVE BEEN HUGE HOLD-UPS AS THE VEHICLES QUEUE UP TO BE EXAMINED. PUBLIC TRANSPORT HAS HAD A HARD JOB COPING WITH THOUSANDS OF EXTRA PASSENGERS WHO HAVE LEFT THEIR CARS AT HOME.

    SOME HAVEN'T TAKEN THIS PRECAUTION HOWEVER AND POLICE HAVE BEEN BUSY WEEDING OUT HE OFFENDERS, ISSUING SUMMONSES AND, IN SOME CASES, TAKING THE VEHICLES OF THE ROADS.
