  • Description

There are some diplomats at the United Nations who are saying this morning that not since Korea has the U-N had as tough a nut to crack as the civil war in Lebanon.

Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold is on his way to Beirut right now... there to talk, among other things, about Lebanon's request for U-N troops to seal off her borders. Last night, just before he took off by plane, Hammarskjold discussed the call for troops with Lebanese Foreign Minister Charles Malik. In Beirut, the secretary-general will inspect the U-N's border watchdog patrols...sent to Lebanon by the Security Council. Hammarskjold is said to be alarmed by indications from Washington that we may send troops to Lebanon, if necessary.

Issues of major magnitude...in the offing.
