IN MANILA, A COLOURFUL PARADE MARKED THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PHILIPPINES INDEPENDENCE ON WEDNESDAY (JUNE 12). PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS LED THE COUNTRY IN THE NATION-WIDE CELEBRATIONS.

IN HIS SPEECH, THE PRESIDENT CALLED ON THE FILIPINO PEOPLE TO UNITE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COUNTRY. HE ALSO MADE PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE COUNTRY'S MUSLIM POPULATION AND ASSURED OF THE GOVERNMENT'S HELP IN DEVELOPING THE MUSLIM AREAS.

(ON THE EVE OF THE ANNIVERSARY, 500 MUSLIM LEADERS FROM SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES CALLED ON THE PRESIDENT AND PLEDGED THEIR LOYALTY TO THE COUNTRY.)
(THE ASSURANCE CAME IN THE WAKE OF RECENT AGITATION BY ONE MUSLIM LEADER FOR A BREAK-AWAY MUSLIM STATE.)
THE PHILIPPINES FORMERLY CELEBRATED ITS INDEPENDENCE DAY ON JULY 4 TO COMMEMORATE THE DATE IN 1946 WHEN IT RECEIVED ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM THE UNITED STATES.

BUT WHEN PRESIDENT DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL ASSUMED OFFICE IN 1962, HE CHANGED IT TO JUNE 12, BECAUSE IT WAS IN THIS DAY IN 1898, WHEN THE FILIPINOS FIRST PROCLAIMED THEIR INDEPENDENCE FROM THE SPANISH RULE.
