  • Description

More than fifty thousand supporters of the Fedayeen, a Marxist guerrilla organisation, demonstrated in Teheran on Friday (29 June) against the so-called rightist drift of the Iranian revolution. It was one of the biggest left-wing displays of strength since the overthrow of the Shah in February.

SYNOPSIS: The demonstration was held ostensibly to honour twenty-one Fedayeen guerrillas killed by the Shah's secret police in a series of gun battles three years ago. But a statement read to the crowd attacked the Islamic authorities for being conservative and anti-working class. The constitutional plans of Iran's new leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini, were harshly criticised, and the demonstrators were warned against what were termed "the power hungry opportunists" acting in the name of Allah. The fedayeen has become popular with young educated Iranians, who are increasingly disillusioned with the direction the Iranian revolution is taking.

Regulations published on Saturday (30 June) by Iran's authorities call for a council of examiners to be elected late in July. The proposed seventy-five member council will then have four weeks in which to complete a review of a draft constitution.

The rally at Teheran University was addressed by mothers and fathers of the martyred Fedayeen guerrillas, and they received a warm round of applause. This was in contrast to some tense moments earlier, when a small band of about fifty Islamic militants, chanting "the Fedayeen must be hanged", tried to disrupt the rally. But they were quickly dispersed by unarmed marshals who'd occupied the university overnight to guard against violence. A similar rally head at the university last Friday by Iran's main secular political force, the National Democratic Front (NDF), was broken up by stone-throwing Islamic youths. During the past month the NDF has warned of an impending dictatorship.
