  • Description

AMERICAN MARITIME UNIONS HAVE TOLD PRESIDENT JOHNSON THAT THEY ARE CONSIDERING A BOYCOTT OF ALL SHIPS WHOSE PARENT NATIONS ARE STILL TRADING WITH NORTH VIETNAM. ONE SUCH BRITISH SHIP IS THE 10,000-TON "ROSE CHRISTINE".

THE "ROSE CHRISTINE", CHARTERED TO A JAPANESE COMPANY, MAKES REGULAR RUNS BETWEEN JAPANESE PORTS AND THOSE IN NORTH VIETNAM. ON THE NORTH-WARD RUN, HER HOLDS NORMALLY CONTAIN COAL FROM NORTH VIETNAMESE MINES. ON THE RETURN TRIP, SHE CARRIES JAPANESE GOODS, INCLUDING MEDICAL SUPPLIES.

THE "ROSE CHRISTINE" HAS A COMPLEMENT OF THREE BRITISH OFFICERS AND 47 CHINESE SEAMEN.

JAPANESE SHIPS AND CREWS DO NOT PLY THE JAPANESE NORTH VIETNAM ROUTE.

THE AMERICAN UNIONS' DECISION - A BOYCOTT COULD BE IMPLEMENTED 30 DAYS FROM 19 FEBRUARY, THEY SAY -- WOULD AFFECT A NUMBER OF NATIONS, INCLUDING BRITAIN, NORWAY, SWEDEN, DENMARK, FRANCE, ITALY AND EGYPT.

THEY SAY THAT THEY ARE DETERMINED TO TAKE ACTION "TO DISCOURAGE THE FLOW OF SUPPLIES WHICH STRENGTHENS NORTH VIETNAM AND THEIR PUPPETS IN THE VIET CONG IN THEIR AGGRESSION" AGAINST SOUTH VIETNAM.
