TRANSCRIPT: "Frozen in its ways, imprisoned by its prejudices, and unable to cope with or even discuss the real threat to our survival. War, economic decline and social disintegration. A TV commercial in Indiana shows a Viet Cong soldier pointing a gun at the viewer, while a voice charges that Senator Hartke has helped the Viet Cong kill Americans by a liberal vote on American trade policies. Riots and arson, while a voice implied that Senator Yarborough sanctioned this madness by supporting Eugene McCarthy in 1968. Slick one minute spots in Tennessee claim that Senator Gore's vote against Judge Carswelll, a vote echoed overwhelmingly by the people of Florida, is proof of an anti-southern vias. The Vice President of the United States has denounced the leadership of Cornell University for an event that never took place at Cornell. He has said that the Reverend Joseph Duffy considered himself a Marxist Revolutionist, which is the precise opposite of what the Reverend said. He has stated that Senator Edward Kennedy, who has seen two brothers assassinated, doesn't understand what violence has done to America. And, if I may speak personally for a moment. What I intended in a speech at the University of Pensylvannia as a plea for students to reject violence and work within the rule of law, have now been twisted by the Vice President into a disparagement of the honourable and brave service of our soldiers in Vietnam. No-one should be forced to defend his patriotism in a political debate. I should not have to wear my five battle stars on my lapel in order to speak my mind. (APPLAUSE).
