THIS EVENING (TUESDAY), THE BERLIN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA GAVE ITS SECOND CONCERT IN THE NEW COVENTRY CATHEDRAL SINCE IT WAS FINISHED AND CONSECRATED LAST YEAR. DURING THE CONCERT THE PROVOST OF COVENTRY PRESENTED THE ORCHESTRA'S DIRECTOR HERR WOLFGANG STRESEMANN WITH A SYMBOLIC CROSS OF NAILS.

    THE CROSS - SYMBOL OF THE NEW SPIRIT OF RECONCILIATION AND UNDERSTANDING - IS MADE FROM NAILS TAKEN FROM THE RUINS OF THE OLD COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, BLITZED DURING ONE OF THE HEAVIEST AIR RAIDS OF WAR.

    MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND PEOPLE HEARD A PROGRAMME OF SCHUBERT'S SYMBOL NO.8 IN B MINOR "THE UNFINISHED" AND BEETHOVEN'S "EROICA". LONG WERE THE NEW COVENTRY CATHEDRAL WAS COMPLETED LAST YEAR, THE DIRECTOR OF BERLIN PHILHARMONIC WISHED TO MAKE A GOODWILL VISIT TO THE CITY AND GIVE A CONCERT IN THE CATHEDRAL WHEN IT WAS FINISHED THE PROCEEDS OF THAT FIRST CONCERT, WHICH TOOK PLACE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE CONSECRATION HAVE PAID FOR A MAGNIFICENT BLUE AND PURPLE WINDS OF THE NORTH AISLE.
