  • Description

King Hussein of Jordan has been continuing his tour of Arab nations with a visit to Syria. He arrived in Damascus on Wednesday (22 June) and immediately met Syria's President Hafez al-Assad for discussions on the general Middle East situation.

SYNOPSIS: Jordan and Syria have strong military and diplomatic ties. They have a joint military council and co-ordinate their foreign diplomatic representation in countries where only one of them formerly had representation. President Assad was at the airport to welcome the Jordanian King and his Prime Minister Zaid al-Rifai.

King Hussein was later quoted in a Kuwaiti newspaper as saying he was certain Israel possessed nuclear weapons. The statements were reportedly made in an interview after the King had returned to Jordan from Syria. The article said the King proposed convening an annual Arab conference to assess the military situation in the Middle East. The King was quoted as saying that the Arabs would take suitable measures to face the situation at the appropriate time.

Another Kuwaiti newspaper reported that King Hussein and President Assad agreed on the need to hold a summit confrontation with Israel. The newspaper also said that both leaders had agreed to stay in constant contact over the Middle East situation.
