At least five hundred people were killed when an express train plunged off the rails west of the Bangladesh capital of Dacca last Friday (26 January).

SYNOPSIS: The engine and four carriages of the crowded train plunged off the rails in the Kushtia district about one hundred and sixty kilometres west of the capital. Many of the passengers had no chance of escape. They died where they sat.

Rescue workers had a gruelling task trying to free bodies tr??ped in the wreckage. According to reports from Bangladesh there was little coverage of the train crash by local newspapers and Bangladesh radio. And the enormity of the disaster only became clear when All India Radio reported that more than five hundred people had been killed.

Large cranes were rushed to the crash site to move the derailed bodies. As the wreckage of the carriages was lifted away more bodies were found. Early reports had suggested that the death toll was about seventy and two hundred injured. But as res???ue work proceeded the toll steadily rose. There has still been no official explanation for the derailment.
