  • Description

Visnews filmed in Chavez Ravine, California as an army of sheriff's deputies accompanied by three large moving vans evicted the Arechiga family at 1767 and 1771 Malvina Street.

A screaming, kicking woman - Mrs. Aurora Vargas, 38, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Arechiga - was carried bodily from the house. Children wailed hysterically as their sobbing mother, Mrs. Victoria Augustian, 29, struggled fiercely in the grasp of deputies while the 72-year-old matriarch of the family, Mrs. Avrana Arechigas, hurled stones at deputies as movers hustled away her belongings. A former neighbour of the Archigas, Mrs. Glen Walters, was forcibly ejected from the battlefield, handcuffed and taken to a squad car after screaming insults at the policemen.

The "Battle of Malvina Street" started when Police Capt. Joe Brady handed over a writ of possession recently issued against the Arechigas by the Superior Court. According to the City Attorney the Arechigas have been occupying the property rent free since 1953 following its acquisition by condemnation by the City Housing Authority in 1951. The city purchased the property from the Housing Authority in 1955. It is intended to be part of a recreational facility that will include a baseball park for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Arechigas sat on the front porch of the modest home where they have lived for 36 years, waiting patiently and stubbornly for the invasion they knew was coming. Also waiting were scores of reporters, photographers, TV-cameramen, and newscasters. A Press-helicopter hovered overhead.

After the eviction bull-dozers pulled down the two houses. But the Arechigas were not beaten yet. Announcing "We will stay here" they erected a tent on the site and took up residence there.
