  • Description

Speaking at the General Assembly of the United Nations yesterday (1 October), Archbishop Makarios called for the withdrawal of Turkish and other foreign troops from Cyprus and rejected any idea of federation in the strife-torn island.

The Archbishop, who was deposed as President of Cyprus in a coup, is still recognised at the UN as the President of Cyprus.

He urged the world body to step in decisively and effectively to safeguard Cypriot territorial integrity and unity.

It was inconceivable that the United Nations, which represents the conscience of humanity, should tolerate an aggressor to apply the rule of the jungle and to create by brutal force faits accomplis, he said.

He spoke of the sufferings of about 200,000 people made homeless by the war and now living as refugees in appalling conditions. He also accused Turkish soldiers for murder, rape, looting and plundering.
